LAMONT BEARDED COLLIES

Beardies are a wonderful breed. I've always said that owning a Beardie is like living in a comedy club. They are active, fun-loving, affectionate dogs, but, they are not for everyone. To anyone contemplating their first Bearded Collie, I offer the following advice and caution. Beardies are an active breed, they are bred for herding and driving sheep and they need a job. A bored Beardie is a destructive Beardie. They need plenty of free running exercise or lots of guided play with a frisbee or ball. They are not couch potatoes.
They are perhaps not the best choice for a family with very young children as they are strong and can be rambunctious. Children who are used to dogs and who have an understanding of how to play with a dog will enjoy a Beardie, but, be warned, they may try to herd your children's friends!
Beardies require a lot of grooming. Of course, the coat can be cut down to reduce on grooming, but why have a Beardie if you do not appreciate its lovely coat? A thorough brushing at least once a week is obligatory, more is better. If you are not prepared to spend time on caring for the coat, or taking the dog to a groomer, the Beardie is not your best choice.
Beardies love their people. They are a herding breed and, as such, it may be that your Beardie will not be as friendly with strangers as some other breeds might be. They are bred to protect their flock. Many Beardies are friendly with everyone, but some are wary of people they don't know. Socializing is vital with a Beardie puppy. Puppy kindergarten and obedience are a must for the first time Beardie owner.
Beardies can be vocal. Like any dog, they can be trained not to bark, but it is part of their instinct.
Beardies are wonderful agility dogs, they love to jump and run. This is an ideal sport for a Beardie. Flyball is also a favourite as they also love to retrieve and run with something in their mouths. They are agile, fast and smart, so find a sport or activity that you like to do with your dog, and you will be a happy owner with a happy Beardie. Beardies need a family that is prepared to spend time with their dog, playing, training, grooming and just canoodling. If you want a dog as a lifetime loving, fun and active companion, why not look at a Beardie?
